PC takes minutes to become usable and Task Manager shows the disk at 100%? Trim startup apps, check disk health and tune Fast Startup.

Common Symptoms and Quick Fixes

Symptom Likely Cause Quick Fix
Disk at 100% for minutes after login Too many startup apps or an HDD Disable high-impact startup apps
Disk stays high with no heavy app Failing drive or file system errors Check health and run chkdsk
Slow boot after updates Fast Startup conflicts Turn off Fast Startup and re-test

Method 1: Disable Startup Apps

Startup programs are the most common cause of a slow login.

1

Open Task ManagerPress Ctrl + Shift + Esc and open the Startup apps tab.
2

Sort by Startup impactClick the column header, then right-click each High impact app you do not need at login and choose Disable.

Method 2: Check Disk Health

Run these in an elevated PowerShell window. A drive reporting Warning or Unhealthy should be backed up and replaced.

Get-PhysicalDisk | Select-Object FriendlyName, MediaType, HealthStatus
chkdsk C: /scan
Pro Tip for AdministratorsIf MediaType shows HDD, an SSD upgrade is the single biggest speed improvement you can make.

Method 3: Test SysMain and Fast Startup

Stop the SysMain service for a test. If disk usage drops, disable it permanently on HDD systems.

sc stop SysMain
sc config SysMain start= disabled
3

Turn off Fast StartupControl Panel > Power Options > Choose what the power buttons do > Change settings that are currently unavailable > untick Turn on fast startup.

Method 4: Repair System Files

Corrupted system files can cause constant background disk activity.

DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
sfc /scannow

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Q: Is it safe to disable SysMain?

Yes. It only prefetches apps. On an SSD it is rarely needed and Windows runs fine without it.

Q: Will disabling startup apps uninstall them?

No. They simply stop launching at login and you can still open them manually.
